Caring for an older adult also means avoiding unnecessary trips. This guide explains when care at home is a good option and how to prepare for it.
Why home can be better
- It avoids trips, waiting and crowds for someone with reduced mobility or who tires easily.
- They stay in a familiar, calm environment, with their family or caregiver.
- The family can talk directly with the professional and clear up questions about the treatment.
What you can arrange at home
- A doctor's visit for everyday problems and follow-up check-ups, for example for chronic conditions.
- Sample collection for lab tests, X-rays and ultrasounds.
- A video consultation with doctors trained in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics.
- Nursing and physiotherapy: quoted case by case; ask about availability for your address.
What to have ready
- A list of medications with doses and times (or the boxes on hand).
- Allergies, previous conditions and surgeries.
- Recent tests, reports or hospital discharge summaries.
- ID card or passport and a family contact.
- A well-lit space and an accessible chair or bed for the examination.
Do not change or stop medications without a doctor's instructions.
When to call 131
Severe difficulty breathing, severe chest pain, loss of consciousness or sudden confusion, drooping face, weakness in one arm or difficulty speaking, heavy bleeding, or a fall with a blow to the head or inability to move a limb. Call 131 (SAMU) or go to the emergency room.
